El is the letter L or something shaped like it.
In American transit, el is short for elevated railway—the trains that run on tracks above street level, particularly Chicago's rapid transit system: We took the el downtown.
The word distinguishes these raised lines from subways running underground. (Capitalized El is a Hebrew name for God.)
