drug-resistant

Antibiotics won't work

Drug-resistant describes pathogens or diseases that no longer respond to medications that once controlled them.

Bacteria become drug-resistant through mutation or overexposure to antibiotics: drug-resistant tuberculosis, drug-resistant staph infections.

The term also applies to cancers that stop responding to chemotherapy.

Drug resistance is a growing public health concern, often accelerated by antibiotic overuse.
