dripline
Where drops fall
The dripline is the imaginary circle on the ground beneath a tree where rainwater drips from the outermost branches—marking the extent of the canopy.
Arborists and gardeners use it to determine where to water, fertilize, or avoid digging, since a tree's feeder roots typically extend to the dripline: Apply mulch out to the dripline but keep it away from the trunk.
