french drain

Perforated pipe channel

A french drain is a trench filled with gravel and a perforated pipe, designed to redirect groundwater away from an area.

The drain collects water that seeps through the gravel and channels it elsewhere, preventing flooding or foundation damage: We installed a french drain along the back of the house.

Often lowercase despite the apparent reference to its inventor, Henry French. (Also written French drain.)
