drainage canals
Engineered water removal
Drainage canals are artificial waterways designed to carry excess water away from an area.
They prevent flooding in agricultural land, urban areas, and low-lying regions by channeling water toward rivers, lakes, or the sea.
Unlike irrigation canals that bring water in, drainage canals move water out: The drainage canals kept the fields from becoming waterlogged.
