downers
Things causing sadness
Downers are drugs that depress the central nervous system, producing sedation, relaxation, and reduced anxiety—the opposite of uppers or stimulants.
Barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and opioids all qualify as downers.
Outside pharmacology, a downer is anything that dampens mood or spirits: The news about layoffs was a real downer.
A person who habitually kills the mood might be called a downer as well.
