dollar sign

Cash notation mark

The dollar sign ($) is the symbol placed before a numeral to indicate U.S. currency: $50, $1.99.

It also represents other dollar-denominated currencies (Canadian, Australian) and sometimes money generally.

In computing, the dollar sign marks variables in many programming languages.

Colloquially, dollar signs in someone's eyes suggest greed or profit-seeking: He saw dollar signs when he heard the offer.
