false start

Race do-over cause

A false start is beginning something that must be restarted.

In racing, it's when a competitor moves before the starting signal, requiring the race to begin again.

More broadly, any failed or aborted attempt to begin something qualifies: After several false starts, she finally finished her novel.

In football, it's a penalty for offensive players moving before the snap.
