disemboweling

Removing internal organs

Disemboweling is the act of removing the internal organs, especially the intestines, from a body.

The term applies to gutting animals for butchering or taxidermy, to gruesome violence in combat or torture, and to horror fiction: The killer disemboweled his victims.

Figuratively, to disembowel something is to gut it of essential contents: Budget cuts disemboweled the program.
