dismemberment
Cutting apart bodies
Dismemberment is the act of cutting, tearing, or pulling the limbs from a body.
The term applies to deliberate acts of violence, torture, or execution, as well as to accidental trauma: The coroner noted signs of postmortem dismemberment.
Figuratively, dismemberment describes breaking apart any unified whole: the dismemberment of the empire after the war.
