greenstone

Metamorphic mineral stone

Greenstone is any of several types of green-colored rock, particularly metamorphic rocks that get their color from minerals like chlorite or epidote.

In archaeology, greenstone refers to tough green rocks prized by ancient peoples for tools and ornaments—especially nephrite jade and similar materials.

New Zealand greenstone (pounamu) holds special cultural significance for Māori.

The term also applies to altered volcanic rocks in ancient geological formations called greenstone belts.
