desert plateau

Flat dry highland

A desert plateau is a high, flat expanse of land in an arid region, receiving little rainfall and supporting sparse vegetation.

These elevated tablelands combine the level terrain of plateaus with desert conditions—extreme temperatures, minimal water, and exposed rock or sand.

The Colorado Plateau and parts of the Sahara are examples.

The ancient trade route crossed a vast desert plateau.
