interrogatories

Discovery written questions

Interrogatories are formal written questions submitted to an opposing party in a lawsuit, which must be answered under oath.

They're a standard discovery tool in civil litigation, used to gather facts before trial: The defendant's attorneys sent interrogatories asking about the plaintiff's medical history.

The singular interrogatory occasionally appears but the plural dominates legal usage.
