depositions
Pretrial witness interviews
Depositions are formal, sworn statements given outside of court, typically as part of legal discovery before a trial.
A witness answers questions from attorneys while under oath, and the testimony is recorded: The lawyer spent weeks reviewing depositions from key witnesses.
Depositions allow both sides to learn what a witness will say and can be used to challenge contradictory testimony at trial.
The singular deposition also means the act of removing someone from power: the deposition of the king.
