Strip of oxygen
To deoxygenate is to remove oxygen from something.
The term appears most often in scientific contexts—deoxygenating blood in a lab, or water becoming deoxygenated when algae blooms consume available oxygen.
The procedure deoxygenates the sample before analysis.
The opposite is oxygenate.
