eddy currents

Looping induced flows

Eddy currents are loops of electrical current induced within conductors by a changing magnetic field.

Named for their resemblance to swirling eddies in water, they flow in closed circles perpendicular to the magnetic field.

Eddy currents generate heat and resist motion—useful in magnetic braking systems and induction cooktops, but wasteful in transformers and motors where they cause energy loss.
