paramagnetism

Unpaired electron effect

Paramagnetism is a form of magnetism in which certain materials are weakly attracted to magnetic fields.

Unlike ferromagnetic materials such as iron, paramagnetic substances—including aluminum, platinum, and oxygen—don't retain magnetization when the external field is removed.

The effect is caused by unpaired electrons in atoms that temporarily align with the applied field.
