involuntary commitment
Compelled psychiatric confinement
Involuntary commitment is the legal process of confining someone to a psychiatric facility against their will.
It typically requires evidence that a person poses a danger to themselves or others, or is unable to care for themselves due to mental illness.
Standards and procedures vary by jurisdiction, but usually involve a court hearing or physician certification: She was placed on a 72-hour involuntary commitment after the suicide attempt.
Also called civil commitment.
