deerfly

Wetland biting pest

A deerfly is a biting fly that feeds on the blood of deer, cattle, horses, and humans.

Smaller than horseflies but similarly persistent, deerflies inflict painful bites and swarm around the head and shoulders of their targets: The trail was beautiful but the deerflies were relentless.

They're most active in summer near water and wooded areas.
