deerflies

Painful woodland biters

Deerflies are biting flies that feed on the blood of deer, cattle, horses, and humans.

Smaller than horseflies but equally persistent, they inflict painful bites and swarm around the head and shoulders of their targets.

They're common near wooded areas and water in summer months.

The deerflies were relentless on the hiking trail.
