death duties

Estate transfer levy

Death duties are taxes levied on the estate of a deceased person before assets pass to heirs.

The term is primarily British; Americans more commonly say estate tax or inheritance tax.

The duties are calculated as a percentage of the estate's value above a certain threshold: The family had to sell the manor house to pay the death duties.
