dead zones

Where nothing thrives

Dead zones are areas where something essential is absent or inactive.

In oceanography, dead zones are regions where oxygen levels have dropped too low to support marine life: Agricultural runoff has created a massive dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico.

In telecommunications, a dead zone is an area with no cell signal.

The term extends to any space where expected activity or coverage fails: The conference room is a WiFi dead zone.
