feedlots

Livestock fattening pens

Feedlots are enclosed areas where livestock—especially cattle—are fattened on concentrated feed before slaughter.

Animals stand in close quarters, eating grain rather than grazing pasture.

The term often carries negative connotations of industrial agriculture: Factory farms and feedlots have replaced the family ranch.

Also called feedyards.
