drive axle
Torque transmission rod
A drive axle is the axle that receives power from the engine and transmits it to the wheels.
In rear-wheel-drive vehicles, the rear axle is the drive axle; in front-wheel-drive vehicles, the front axle serves this function.
All-wheel-drive vehicles have drive axles at both ends.
The term distinguishes powered axles from passive ones that simply support weight.
