datelines

News story headers

Datelines are the lines at the beginning of news articles indicating where and when the story was filed: TOKYO, March 15.

The dateline establishes the reporter's location and grounds the story geographically.

By extension, to dateline a story is to assign it a place of origin.

In journalism, the dateline carries implicit authority—a reporter on the ground rather than rewriting wire copy.
