daemons

Greek supernatural entities

Daemons is the plural of daemon, which has two distinct uses.

In computing, a daemon is a background process that runs continuously without direct user interaction—handling tasks like print queues, email delivery, or system monitoring: The mail daemon crashed overnight.

In mythology and fantasy literature, daemon is an alternate spelling of demon, often used to distinguish morally neutral spirits from evil ones: His daemon took the form of a snow leopard.

The computing sense comes from an acronym backronym but was likely influenced by Maxwell's demon, a thought experiment in physics.
