batch jobs

Queued processing work

Batch jobs are computing tasks that run without user interaction, typically scheduled during off-peak hours.

Unlike interactive programs that wait for input, batch jobs process data automatically from start to finish: The payroll batch jobs run every Friday night.

The term dates to early computing when jobs were submitted in batches on punch cards, but remains current for any automated, queued processing.
