daimon

Inner divine voice

A daimon is a spirit or divine power in ancient Greek belief—not necessarily good or evil, but a guiding force or inner genius.

Socrates famously spoke of his daimon as an inner voice that warned him against wrong actions.

The word later influenced the spelling and conception of demon, though daimon lacks the purely malevolent associations of its descendant.
