systemd

Init daemon replacement

Systemd is a system and service manager for Linux operating systems, responsible for initializing the system and managing background processes.

It replaced older init systems starting around 2010 and became standard in most major Linux distributions.

The name follows Unix convention where "d" denotes a daemon—a background process: The server won't boot because systemd failed to start the network service.

Systemd is both praised for its features and criticized for its complexity and departure from Unix philosophy.
