cosmography

Charting the cosmos

Cosmography is the science or practice of mapping and describing the general features of the universe or the earth.

It encompasses the study of celestial bodies and their arrangement as well as the physical geography of our planet.

The term was more common in earlier centuries when astronomy and geography were less rigidly separated as disciplines.

A cosmographer might produce maps showing both earthly continents and the positions of stars and planets in a unified representation of the known world.
