control stick

Cockpit steering handle

A control stick is the lever a pilot uses to maneuver an aircraft, controlling pitch and roll by tilting forward, backward, and side to side.

Fighter jets and small planes typically have a stick between the pilot's knees or to one side, while larger aircraft use a yoke.

The term extends to similar devices in video games and vehicle simulations: She prefers a control stick to a standard game controller.
