pterygium

Eye tissue overgrowth

A pterygium is a wedge-shaped growth of fleshy tissue on the conjunctiva that extends onto the cornea, typically from the inner corner of the eye.

Common in people with prolonged sun exposure, it can cause irritation, redness, and if it grows large enough, impaired vision.

Plural: pterygia or pterygiums.
