congenital disorder

Inborn medical condition

A congenital disorder is a medical condition present from birth, whether inherited genetically or caused by factors during pregnancy or delivery.

The term covers structural abnormalities, metabolic dysfunctions, and developmental conditions: The heart defect was congenital, not acquired.

Congenital doesn't necessarily mean inherited—fetal alcohol syndrome is congenital but not genetic.
