muscle atrophy
Strength fading away
Muscle atrophy is the wasting or shrinking of muscle tissue, typically from disuse, malnutrition, or disease.
A limb immobilized in a cast will undergo atrophy; so will muscles deprived of nerve signals.
The opposite process—building muscle through exercise—is hypertrophy.
Physical therapy can help reverse atrophy after surgery.
