communication protocol

Message exchange rules

A communication protocol is an agreed-upon set of rules governing how data is transmitted between devices or systems.

Protocols specify formatting, timing, sequencing, and error handling so that different machines can exchange information reliably: HTTP is the protocol that powers the web, The devices couldn't connect because they used incompatible protocols.

The term extends to any standardized procedure for information exchange.
