coilings

Loops forming spirals

Coilings are instances of winding into loops or spirals.

The word appears in descriptions of snakes, ropes, vines, or anything that wraps around itself or another object: the coilings of the python around its prey, the intricate coilings of the garden hose.

It can also describe figurative encirclements: the coilings of bureaucracy.
