flattenings
Pressing into planes
Flattenings are instances of making something flat or flatter.
The word applies to physical processes—the flattening of dough, the flattening of terrain—and to abstract ones: The flattenings of the yield curve worried investors.
In geometry, flattenings describe how much a sphere deviates from perfect roundness, as with Earth's polar flattening.
