coachbuilding
Custom car construction
Coachbuilding is the craft of designing and constructing custom vehicle bodies, originally for horse-drawn carriages and later for automobiles.
A coachbuilder creates bespoke bodywork on a separate chassis, allowing wealthy clients to commission unique vehicles: The Rolls-Royce was sent to Italy for coachbuilding.
The trade has largely disappeared as modern cars are built with integrated bodies, though a few luxury firms still practice it.
