closeting

Hiding in private

Closeting is the act of concealing something or someone, typically by shutting away in a small private space.

Most often it refers to hiding one's sexual orientation or gender identity: The closeting of gay athletes remains common in professional sports.

To closet oneself is to withdraw for privacy or secrecy: She closeted herself in the study to finish the manuscript.
