beam of light

Concentrated light stream

A beam of light is a narrow, directed stream of light rays traveling in roughly parallel paths.

Unlike diffuse light that scatters in all directions, a beam maintains its concentrated form over distance: A beam of light cut through the darkness, The flashlight's beam swept across the room.

Beams can be natural—sunlight streaming through a gap in clouds—or artificial, as from spotlights, lasers, or headlights.
