cis-trans
Same-side, opposite-side
Cis-trans describes a type of isomerism in chemistry where molecules have the same atoms but different spatial arrangements.
In cis isomers, similar groups sit on the same side of a bond or ring; in trans isomers, they're on opposite sides.
The distinction matters because cis and trans forms often have different properties: cis-trans isomerism affects how fats behave in the body.
Trans fats, for instance, are chemically distinct from their cis counterparts.
