cinder blocks

Hollow concrete blocks

Cinder blocks are hollow rectangular building blocks made from concrete mixed with coal cinders or ash.

They're cheaper and lighter than solid concrete blocks, used widely in construction for walls, foundations, and utilitarian structures.

The term often applies loosely to any concrete masonry unit: The garage was built from cinder blocks.

Also called breeze blocks in British English.
