dog watch

Brief nautical duty

A dog watch is one of two shortened watches aboard ships, typically from 4–6 PM and 6–8 PM.

These two-hour watches (rather than the standard four) rotate the schedule so sailors don't stand the same watches every day.

The term appears occasionally in general use for any short or split shift: I'm pulling the dog watch tonight.
