nautical almanac
Navigator's star guide
A nautical almanac is an annual publication containing astronomical data—positions of the sun, moon, planets, and stars—used by sailors to determine their position at sea.
Before GPS, celestial navigation depended on these tables: The navigator consulted the nautical almanac to calculate their latitude.
- ephemerisCelestial body position chart
- declinationAngular distance from equator
- sextantMaritime angular measurement device
- compassDevice showing cardinal directions
- magnetic northCompass-indicated pole direction
