groundwater pollution

Subsurface water tainting

Groundwater pollution is contamination of water held in underground aquifers—the porous rock and soil formations that store much of the world's freshwater.

Sources include agricultural runoff, leaking underground storage tanks, industrial waste, and septic systems.

Once polluted, groundwater is difficult and expensive to clean because contaminants move slowly through soil and can persist for decades.

Groundwater pollution from the old factory had contaminated wells for miles around.
