hydrofluorocarbons

Greenhouse gas refrigerants

Hydrofluorocarbons are synthetic compounds containing hydrogen, fluorine, and carbon, used as refrigerants, aerosol propellants, and foam-blowing agents.

They replaced ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons but turned out to be potent greenhouse gases—thousands of times more warming than carbon dioxide.

International agreements now phase them down: The technician switched the AC unit to a low-HFC refrigerant.
