chipping in
Adding your share
Chipping in means contributing to a group effort—usually money or work.
When friends chip in for a gift, each pays part of the cost: Everyone chipped in twenty dollars for the retirement present.
The phrase extends beyond money to any shared contribution: We all chipped in to clean up after the party.
In golf, to chip in is to hole the ball from off the green with a short, lofted shot.
