featherstitch

Branching decorative stitch

A featherstitch is a decorative embroidery stitch that creates a branching, feather-like pattern.

The needle alternates from side to side, producing a zigzag line with small diagonal stitches extending outward: She added a featherstitch along the seam of the crazy quilt.

The technique is common in heirloom sewing and quilting.
