golden ratio
Phi's numerical value
The golden ratio is approximately 1.618, a mathematical proportion found when a line is divided so that the ratio of the whole to the longer part equals the ratio of the longer to the shorter part.
It appears throughout nature, art, and architecture—in spiral shells, the Parthenon, Renaissance paintings.
Artists and designers invoke it as an aesthetic ideal: The logo follows the golden ratio.
Also called the golden mean or golden section.
