centreboard

Sailboat's drop fin

A centreboard is a retractable fin that projects through the bottom of a sailboat to prevent sideways drift.

Unlike a fixed keel, it pivots or slides into a housing within the hull, allowing the boat to navigate shallow waters: We raised the centreboard to beach the dinghy.

Also spelled centerboard in American English.
